Oct 23, Does he look to be right size??

by Nathaniel
(California)

He is exactly 5 months old in the pics just wondering if he looks a good size, his head, his body and height? He currently weighs 49 lbs is that good just let me know what you think?

I am asking because I have seen pics of his dad at 6 months and to me his dad looks a lot bigger - is that normal for offspring to be smaller than parents?

Hi Nathaniel
From the photos your pup looks to be well built and I wouldn't say he looks undersized at all. He has good bone size and a nice head.

At 5 months old he's still very much a baby, and although he's slightly under the 'average' weight range for this age, that really doesn't mean anything in terms of his eventual (adult) size.

All puppies are different and grow at different rates, and this rate of development can vary according to different bloodlines etc. The biggest males usually take the longest to mature. He will be growing both in height and in weight until he's at least 2 years old, most probably longer.

Don't be tempted to try to get him to grow faster or put on more weight as that can lead to all sorts of health issues and in fact reduce his potential rather than increase it. Make sure he's getting a high quality, premium puppy food, good veterinary care and appropriate exercise and then let nature take it's course.

I personally think new owners worry too much about the size of their Rottie pup, and it's usually totally unnecessary. He will most likely grow up to be close to his fathers height/weight, but of course he could be slightly smaller, or bigger. He's a different dog.

However his size isn't the most important thing, his overall health is number one, his character/temperament is number two.... and then his size/shape/conformation. Rottweilers have a whole range of things that make them so special and were never originally bred to be 'XL' or 'Giant' dogs. Just enjoy him for the amazing animal he is :o)
